Dinner at Tono Sushi, Washington, DC

Last night, husband and I went to one of our favorite sushi places in Washington: Tono Sushi.  I love that Tono has a wide selection, very fresh fish and really good brown rice sushi.  I started off with miso soup and seaweed salad:

Tono offers several options for miso soup - last night I picked the tofu and yellowtail one, which, like all the others I have tried there is delicious.  I particularly like the seaweed salad at Tono because it offers a sampler of several seaweeds. I rarely make use of the dressing because I like the seaweed on its own, but the dressing is very good - thick rich sesame dressing.

Husband started his meal with gyoza and chicken yakitori, two of this favorites at Tono:

The sad truth of brown rice sushi is that, if not made correctly, it can be inedible. That's why I make the extra trek to Tono because it is the best brown rice sushi I have found in Washington, DC - it is hearty and definitely brown rice, but has the same fluffiness that regular white rice sushi has.  I had a yellowtail and scallion roll as well as nigiri pieces of yellowtail and salmon:

Husband had the Manhattan Roll (Spicy Crunchy Shrimp) and the Spicy Scallop roll.  He said both were delicious:

Tono Sushi is right by the Woodley Park - National Zoo Metro stop, so perfect if you are in Washington, DC and visiting the zoo.  They have a sushi happy hour special with $1 nigiri sushi from 5 to 7.30pm everyday.

I like Tono Sushi too. Have you tried Sakana (on P Street near Dupont)?

Yes, Sakana is lovely too. Sadly, no brown rice sushi there, at least to my knowledge.

Ah, gotcha. Wasn't sure if they have it or not.
